NRW.URBAN: Zollverein coal mine world cultural heritage
Jointly with the City of Essen, NRW.URBAN intends to develop the only land for new construction available on the area of the former Zollverein coal mine industrial complex in the north of Essen. The new quarter of the design city is to be constructed on the premises of the mine's former material storage area. The design city is to not only make a contribution to the development of Zollverein to a design and culture location, but also to the region's and the country's development on the topic of "creative economy / design." At this exposed location, a representative, urbane address is to develop with the new construction of the Folkwang University of the Arts, a hotel as well as trade and services from the creative economy and a residential zone.
Appropriate investors for the implementation of the design city are to be selected in a European-wide negotiation procedure with upstream participation competition.
