Pilot project hydrogen trains
From 2020 onwards, pollution-free fuel cell trains are to be used in North Rhine-Westphalia. 12 trains will be operated with hydrogen instead of diesel engines on the routes from Essen to Borken and Coesfeld. Contracting authorities VRR and NWL are looking for a manufacturer to supply the vehicles for the RE 14 line and to maintain them for 20 years.
The vehicle bidding procedure is based on an adapted RRX model. In addition to maintenance, the manufacturer also has to provide hydrogen for refueling vehicles. A second bidding procedure is used to award the contract to a rail transport company that will be operating the hydrogen vehicles.
