Spectacular design for the new Buddenbrookhaus in Lübeck can be built

The site of Thomas Mann’s Buddenbrook novel is already one of Germany’s most successful literary museums. Now the museum space is to be doubled. The city, the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, and private donors have provided EUR 20 million for the new Buddenbrookhaus building in Lübeck’s city center. A part of this amount was initially used to finance the acquisition of the neighboring building. This ensemble is now set to become one of the most modern buildings in terms of museum education.

In a Europe-wide architectural competition, two young architects prevailed over established competitors with their spectacular design. After months of litigation and summary proceedings before the Higher Regional Court, the architectural duo can now commence with implementing the design.

Dr. Martin Schellenberg and Fabian Budde of Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek successfully defended the Hanseatic City of Lübeck against legal challenges in the architectural competition and assisted in drafting the contract.
