Taking action to combat climate change is one of the most important tasks of German and European politics at the current time. Climate protection will be the defining issue of the next decade, with energy law playing a key role. 

The EU intends to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050, while Germany is aiming to reach this goal by 2045 already. Against this background, the discussion currently focuses on topics such as an early coal phase-out, the accelerated expansion of renewable energies, the conversion to sustainable transport with renewable energy resources (“mobility transition”), the use of “green hydrogen”, and European and national emissions trading. All of this requires fundamental restructuring of the traditional energy industry, including, in particular, the nationwide expansion of the grid, digitalization such as the use of smart meters, efficient congestion management (Redispatch 2.0), and increased use of batteries and other alternative electricity and energy storage systems. 

In addition to this, the distortions on the energy markets, which are among other things a consequence of the war in Ukraine, are in the focus of the industry.
