Traditional North German sailboat is made fit again

NORDWIND, built for the German Navy as part of their officers training programs, and today a proud exhibit of the German Naval Museum, is being fully refurbished.
 
Generations of Officer Cadets were trained on NORDWIND from 1956 until the boat, built in the Second World War as a modified war fishing trawler, passed into the museum’s possession in Wilhelmshaven in 2009. Since then, however, it has not been resting in lofty museum halls: NORDWIND is still ready to sail. It can be booked for cruises and regularly enhances major events such as the Hamburg Harbor Birthday. To ensure that this remains the case, the federal government has now provided funding for extensive repair and renovation work. The contract was awarded to a specialist shipyard.
