Ute Jasper on WDR TV - submitting the petition against Tihange to Parliament President Schulz in Brussels
District administrators, mayors, and other politicians from the Eifel region continue to demand the shutdown of Belgian nuclear power plant Tihange. In order to obtain support and more political influence, they now submitted a questionnaire to EU Parliament President Martin Schulz. Dr. Ute Jasper, Partner at the law firm of Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek, and Dr. Laurence Westen who legally advise on the procedure, had drafted the petition against Tihange with their team. The delegation was accompanied by TV station WDR.
Municipalities are demanding more transparency with the questionnaire. They want to know whether the Belgian State may be in violation of European law because it continues to allow the accident-prone nuclear power plant Tihange 2 in operation. The information request is addressed to the relevant EU Commissioner.
Schulz stated that he considered the power plant to be unsafe and that he would support the petition. Tihange 2 was put into operation again, although thousands of cracks had been found in the reactor pressure vessel. In addition, the reactor had to be shut down several times already due to malfunctions.
