New Folkwang University at Zollverein location with support of HEUKING KÜHN LÜER WOJTEK
Via its real estate company NRW.URBAN, North Rhine-Westphalia sold properties on the former industrial complex of coal mine Zollverein I/II/VIII, where the new Folkwang University of the Arts will be built for the state from 2015. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia will rent the buildings. Buyer and landlord is Essen-based Welterbe Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG – a merger of RAG Montan Immobilien GmbH and project developers Kölbl Kruse GmbH of Essen. In addition to the university, a hotel is being developed on the premises, which are protected as UNESCO World Heritage. The new "Design City" on Zollverein has a surface of 13,000 square meters.
HEUKING KÜHN LÜER WOJTEK structured and carried out the sales process together with NRW.URBAN. "We are pleased for everyone involved. In coordination with the city of Essen, the Zollverein foundation, and the monument authorities, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia found a buyer, who will develop the Zollverein coal mine in an optimum manner and provide for its new and creative use. Folkwang University of the Arts was involved in the process from the outset and as future tenant is excited about the architect's plans," said Dr. Ute Jasper, Head of HEUKING KÜHN LÜER WOJTEK's Public Sector & Public Procurement Practice Group. She advised on the process jointly with Stephan Freund (Real Estate and Construction) and Dr. Isabel Niedergöker (Public Procurement).
